Covering an area of some 824,292 sq km of
savannah and desert, Namibia
is located on the Atlantic coast of southern Africa.
Populated by just under 2 million people, the country had an estimated GDP of
US$ 7,000 per person in 2005.
Namibia has enjoyed multi-party democracy
since gaining its independence from South Africa in 1990. The Namibian
dollar continues to be pegged to the South African Rand.
The country has a long history of mineral
exploration and mining which accounts for approximately 20% of the GDP. Namibia
currently produces diamonds, gold, copper, lead, zinc, uranium, salt and fluorite. It has also been a producer of tin, silver, vanadium, tantalite and
phosphate.
Although considered a relatively mature
exploration environment, Namibia
is a vast country with well endowed geological terrains, two thirds of which
are hidden under a shallow cover of recent sediments. The country still has
good potential for the discovery of world class mineral deposits. This is demonstrated by the discovery and
development of the Skorpion Zinc mine in 2003 and the Otjikoto gold deposit,
which is located 300 km to the north east of Anglo American's producing Navachab gold mine
(approximately 80,000 oz per year)
Good geological potential, political and fiscal
stability and continued growth has prompted Clarity to invest in this beautiful
southern African country.
